Russia, China, Iran slam Israeli attack on Gaza

The massacre of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip by the Israeli armed forces drew criticism in Moscow, Beijing and Tehran. These statements, however, only underscore the class divide between the feelings of billions of workers, horrified by the Israeli assault on the defenseless enclave, and the hypocritical positions of capitalist regimes across Eurasia.

The Kremlin, which has close ties to Israel, has adopted a hypocritical pose of neutrality between Israel and Gaza, calling out the “Quartet” for the Middle East - made up of the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and of Russia - to negotiate a peace agreement.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: “We condemn the attacks from both sides, which target residential areas… We believe that the international community should not remain indifferent to what is happening. The Quartet of international mediators is directly obliged to contribute to the solution of the Palestinian question ”.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that the Israeli attack could spark a wider war. Stating that Moscow is "extremely concerned about the growing number of human casualties," he euphemistically stated: "In general, the region has a rather fragile security system, a huge lack of mutual trust and a long-standing potential for regional conflicts, which does not contribute to stabilization ”.

Israel rejected an announcement by the Russian Foreign Ministry that it had appealed to Israeli diplomats on Wednesday to say that new civilian casualties in Gaza were "unacceptable". Israel responded with a statement that said it would set no deadline to end the attacks on Gaza.

As for the Beijing regime, it called on Washington to negotiate with Israel. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on Washington to "shoulder its responsibilities by taking a fair stance" during Sunday's UN Security Council debate on Palestine. Yi also warned of a military escalation, calling for "to prevent the situation from deteriorating further, to prevent the region from falling back into turmoil."

Significantly, Yi also indicated that China could host Israeli-Palestinian talks, saying: “China reiterates its invitation to the peacemakers from Palestine and Israel to come to China for dialogue, and welcome the negotiators of Palestine and Israel for direct talks in China ”.

Yi, however, refrained from calling on Israel to end the massacre immediately. He only asked him to "end the blockade and siege of Gaza as soon as possible." We must guarantee the security and rights of civilians in the occupied Palestinian territory and allow access for humanitarian aid ”.

When Beijing's appeals to Washington failed, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian complained on Tuesday that US vetoes were crippling the Security Council. “People can't help but wonder if this is the values and human rights diplomacy that the US government has announced. Why is the United States so insensitive to the human rights of the Palestinian people when it keeps talking about defending the human rights of Muslims? ”

This was apparently a low-key reference to Washington's astounding hypocrisy supporting Israel's war on Gaza, while waging a campaign of lies that accuses Beijing of carrying out "genocide" of Muslim Uyghurs in the west. from China.

Complaining that "the attention of the United States has completely shifted to competition between great powers," the Chinese state daily Global Times has remarkably criticized Washington for not being involved in the Middle Ages. -East: "In order to focus on China and Russia, Washington is keen to withdraw from the Middle East and does not want to invest new energies and resources in the name of peace between Palestine and Israel ... But we must do understand in Washington that justice cannot be buried alive ”.

In fact, the imperialist wars in the Middle East in the three decades following the restoration of capitalism by the Soviet and Chinese Stalinist bureaucracies in 1989-91 helped clarify one thing. It is useless to appeal to American or European imperialism to obtain "justice". Since the Stalinist dissolution of the Soviet Union removed the main military counterweight to Washington, the United States has waged aggressive wars of regime change, notably in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria, claiming millions of dead and destroying entire societies.

In particular, they have repeatedly provided unwavering support for the unilateral Israeli massacres in Gaza in 2009, 2014, and now 2021.

China's economic rise as a haven for cheap labor for transnational corporations has of course increased its influence in the region. The Global Times reported that China is now the Arab countries' largest trading partner, with an annual trade volume of nearly $ 240 billion, while China imports 250 million tonnes of crude oil from them. The Jerusalem Post called trade between China and Israel a "perfect marriage", growing "from $ 50 million to $ 13.1 billion between 1992 and 2017", making China the third largest trading partner in China. Israel. China even recently signed a 25-year, $ 400 billion trade deal with Iran.

US imperialism remains the dominant financial and military power in the region, however, and has supported the Israeli attacks on Gaza. This underscores the bankruptcy of any prospect of defending Gaza that is not based on the mobilization of the international working class opposition to imperialism and war.

While there is deep opposition in the Israeli, American and international working class to social inequality and the official politically criminal handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, Moscow, Beijing and Tehran are unable to appeal to these sentiments. and are hostile to it.

The Russian, Chinese and Iranian regimes fear growing opposition from the working class in their countries. Beijing is plotting a deeply unpopular increase in the retirement age, even as more than 400 Chinese billionaires have collectively raised more than $ 2,000 billion. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani noted that his regime is terrified that in the event of a pandemic "people, facing hunger, poverty and unemployment, will take to the streets."

The Iranian regime felt compelled to make more critical statements about Gaza, amid pro-Palestinian protests in Tehran and growing anger across the Middle East. The war in Gaza follows US and Israeli provocations against Iran, including deadly sanctions on essential medical supplies amid the COVID-19 pandemic and Israel's criminal attacks on the Iranian installation of Natanz uranium enrichment.

After the Israelis hit the Qatari Red Crescent building in Gaza, the Qatari foreign ministry condemned Tel Aviv on Monday. Separately, Turkish state agency Anadolu reported that its photojournalist Mohammad Dahla was wounded on Wednesday by an Israeli missile in Gaza, after "two journalists from the Anadolu agency were injured while covering Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip. Gaza Strip last week ”. Israel also bombed a media center that housed PA and Al Jazeera operations in Gaza.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan that "Palestine is the most important common issue of the Islamic community" during a phone call on Sunday. According to the IRNA news agency, he said that "it is essential to face the crimes against Palestine and immediately stop killing the oppressed and defenseless people." He added that "Islamic states should cooperate to use the capacity of international bodies such as the United Nations and the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to deal with the aggression of the Zionist regime."

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has reportedly canceled a planned visit to Vienna after Israeli flags were raised on government buildings to show support for the Israeli war. He tweeted: "As US-made ammunition rains down on innocent Palestinians, US gives additional $ 735 million in 'precision' missiles to Israel to kill more children with more precision." .

Zarif also criticized reactionary regional regimes, including Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco, which have "normalized" their relations with Israel, saying: "The slaughter of Palestinian children today follows this so-called normalization."

Tehran is, however, in talks to reestablish relations with Saudi Arabia, a key architect of this "normalization" and a leading ally of the Israeli government. This underscores the cynicism of Iranian politics and the urgent need to build an international anti-war movement based on a socialist agenda in the international working class to end the attacks on Gaza
